Erumeli is the gateway town of the Sabarimala pilgrimage, in the eastern hills of Kottayam district. Its Sree Dharma Sastha temple, known as the Valiyambalam, stands in the middle of the town; about half a kilometre away is the smaller Kochambalam, the Petta Sastha shrine, with the Vavar mosque beside it. Together these three places form the stage for the Petta Thullal, the ecstatic dance of Ayyappa pilgrims that is one of Kerala's most distinctive rituals of religious harmony.
Through the Mandalam and Makaravilakku season, from mid-November to mid-January, the town is a river of black-clad pilgrims who pray here, walk around the mosque, and set out on the old forest route to Sabarimala. The temple is run by the Travancore Devaswom Board, and its own ten-day festival comes later, in Kumbham, when the pilgrim crowds have gone.
Tradition places at Erumeli the climax of the Ayyappa story: here the Lord is said to have slain the buffalo-demoness Mahishi, and the town's name is explained as a memory of that killing. The Petta Thullal re-enacts the rejoicing of the hunters and villagers who danced around the fallen demoness. Ayyappa's Muslim companion Vavar is honoured in the mosque beside the Kochambalam, and pilgrims circle it before they go on to the temple; the mosque committee receives the dancers each year.
A local account of the temple's founding tells of Alampally Millakar, an officer of the chieftain of Ranni, who was slighted at a festival elsewhere and resolved to build a shrine of his own. On an astrologer's advice he is said to have recovered an image of Sastha from the Pampa river and installed it here. The date of the temple is not recorded; the tantric rights belong to the Thazhamon Madom, as at Sabarimala.
The Petta Thullal takes place on the 27th of Dhanu. Two groups lead it: the pilgrims of Ambalappuzha, who dance in the morning and wait for a sacred kite to circle overhead, and those of Alangad, who dance in the afternoon. Each group starts at the Kochambalam, goes round the Vavar mosque, and ends at the Valiyambalam, where the pilgrims leave their wooden weapons on the temple roof and bathe in the stream before the forest walk to Sabarimala. The Devaswom board provides shelter, water and food to pilgrims through the season.

Traditional, modest clothing: mundu or veshti for men, saree, half-saree, long skirt or churidar for women. Men remove shirts inside the inner courtyard. Sabarimala pilgrims come in black or blue with the irumudi; others should follow the temple's notices.
The temple is open to all Hindus; others follow the temple's current notices. Footwear is left outside. Non-pilgrims visiting during the Petta Thullal should keep to the sides of the route and not block the dancers.
The Mandalam–Makaravilakku season (mid-November to mid-January) is extremely crowded, above all on the Petta Thullal day (Dhanu 27, early-to-mid January) and the days around Makaravilakku, when the town's roads are jammed. The ten-day Kumbham festival (February–March) is lively but manageable. For a quiet darshan, come between March and October.
Kochambalam (Petta Sastha temple) and the Vavar mosque – about 0.5 km, the starting point of the Petta Thullal.
Peroorthodu and the forest route to Sabarimala – the traditional pilgrim path begins just outside town.
